Lure Ryan was born in Edgefield, South Carolina, USA, on 27 June 1907, to parents Robert M. and Mattie E. Brunson. She had 10 siblings: James, Oneal, Mamie Sue, Sophie, Georgia, Mattie, Viola, George, Sylvester, and Steve.

At some point, she married Charles Ryan. She had eight children: Hester Powell, Harold Ryan, Geneva and Calvin Dickerson, Lorraine Miller, Gilbert Ryan, Robert Dickerson, and Doris McClellan. She was a presser for the garment industry.
