BIOGRAPHY

Nunn was born in Surry County, North Carolina, USA, on 25 September 1909. She was adopted at a young age by the Young family in Pilot Mountain. Her adoptive father was a doctor.

For many years, she lived with her future husband, Troy Monroe Nunn Sr. (1908–2004). Upon marrying Troy, she became part of a large family that included his five sisters, one brother, and four sons: Troy Jr., Sammy, Phillip, and Foster. Lillie had one biological son, Sherman Young, who served in the military but passed away from cancer. Before her marriage to Troy, she worked at one of the large knitting mills in Mount Airy. After their marriage in 1970, she became a homemaker. At that time, Troy was employed by his youngest son’s company. Despite marrying later in life, the couple shared 34 years together until her husband passed away at the age of 95 in February 2004.

In 1999, her stepson Troy Jr. returned to live in Pilot Mountain. A year later, he moved to a more rural area in Westfield and brought both parents to live with him so he could care for them. At the age of 99, Lillie declared to her family her determination to live to 113. She stayed with him until she began experiencing difficulty walking, prompting her move to Central Continuing Care in Mount Airy in March 2014.

Nunn passed away in Mount Airy, North Carolina, USA, on 25 December 2020, at the age of 111 years, 91 days.
