Kaya Itō [Japanese: 伊東カヤ] was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Saga Prefecture at the time of her death.
Kaya Itō (伊藤カヤ) was born in Kobunatsu, Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, Japan, on August 30, 1894. She married the head priest of a Sōtō Zen temple and had eight children. By the age of 110, she had 14 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.
At 106, Itō became the oldest living person in Saga Prefecture. At 107, she was living at the temple with one of her grandchildren. Though her hearing had slightly declined, she enjoyed being taken on walks in her wheelchair and ate a wide variety of foods, favoring soft dishes. On her 109th birthday, she was suffering from bronchitis and in weakened health, but she was still eating three liquid meals a day and remained in stable condition.
Itō passed away from natural causes in a hospital in Kashima City on the evening of her 111th birthday, August 30, 2005. Following her death, Natsu Kumagawa of Imari City succeeded her as the oldest living person in Saga Prefecture.
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 21 September 2004 and later recongized by LongeviQuest.
