Ikuyo Tanaka [Japanese: 田中幾代] was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Nagasaki Prefecture at the time of her death.
Ikuyo Tanaka (田中幾代) was born in Okayama Prefecture, Japan, on August 2, 1893.
She worked as a nurse in Tokyo, where she met her future husband. In 1936, the couple moved to his hometown of Hasami Town in Nagasaki Prefecture. After her husband passed away when she was 76, she lived alone until entering a nursing home in 1990 at the age of 97.
Tanaka enjoyed calligraphy and ikebana (Japanese flower arranging). She was also fond of watching period dramas and sumo wrestling on television. Drawing on her experience as a nurse, she took great care in managing her diet and health, which was said to be the secret to her longevity.
As of August 2003, at the age of 110, her hearing had declined, but her eyesight remained strong, and she was able to communicate through writing. She continued to eat three full meals a day and was energetic enough to serve tea to other nursing home residents before mealtimes.
On April 14, 2004, Tanaka passed away of natural causes at a nursing home in Hasami Town, Nagasaki Prefecture, at the age of 110 years and 256 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest living person in Nagasaki Prefecture.
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group on 15 April 2012.
