Elizabeth Delaney (née Duffy) was an American supercentenarian.
Elizabeth Delaney was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, on 12 March 1903. Her parents were William Aloysius Duffy (1867–1953) and Maryann McManus (1868–1958). Her father was born in Lancashire, England, and her mother was born in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. She had four siblings.
Delaney married a neighborhood friend, John Delaney, in a quiet church ceremony, and the couple honeymooned in Atlantic City. Even in her later years, she fondly remembered their courtship, which was filled with dancing and picnics. After 35 years, she retired from AT&T’s clerical department and moved to Cape May, New Jersey, where she lived for 25 years before relocating to Sarasota. In her spare time, Delaney enjoyed refinishing furniture and sewing clothes for her granddaughter, Elizabeth Jones.
At the age of 111, Delaney was reported to use a wheelchair, and her eyesight and hearing had declined. Her comforts included living at home with her daughter and grandson, the companionship of two cats, plenty of salty food, and daily episodes of Judge Judy on television.
Elizabeth Delaney passed away in Sarasota, Florida, on 14 October 2014, at the age of 111 years, 216 days.
Delaney’s age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 30 March 2014. The validation was later recognized by LongeviQuest.
