Carmela Maria Callède was an Italian-born French supercentenarian. Her age has been validated by the European Supercentenarian Organisation (ESO).

BIOGRAPHY

Carmela Callède was born in Visco, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Italy, on 29 September 1903. She grew up with five brothers, and her father worked as the village blacksmith. After marrying Gino, she welcomed a daughter in 1930, followed a few years later by a son, Marcel. Around 1933, she joined her husband in France, but tragedy struck in 1935 when Gino died of tuberculosis.

To support her family, Carmella found work as a maid for a landlady on Rue Gambetta in Montauban. Hoping to provide her children with a father figure, she later married Robert Callede, a nurse at the sanatorium, and with him found a peaceful life. Robert became a devoted partner, helping her raise her young family.

In the 1950s, Carmella changed paths and began working as a babysitter. Over the years, she cared for the children of 52 Montauban families, leaving a lasting mark on the community.

Carmela Callède passed away in the commune of Montauban in the department of Tarn-et-Garonne, Occitanie, France, on 1 October 2013, two days after her 110th birthday.

RECOGNITION

Callède’s age was verified by Antoine Demarais, Paolo Scarabaggio, and an anonymous researcher, and was validated by the ESO on 26 March 2023.
