María Atanacia Macías Ramírez is a Mexican semi-supercentenarian.

BIOGRAPHY

Atanacia Macías Ramírez was born on a farm called Los Adobes in Nochistlán de Mejía, Zacatecas, Mexico, on 2 May 1917. From a young age, she grew up among the fields and livestock, learning the value of hard work, simplicity, and respect for the land.

She married Serapio Ramírez Flores in 1933. From that union, her first daughter, Francisca Ramírez Macías, was born in 1934. However, tragedy soon marked her path: Serapio died just three years later, a victim of black fever. In 1943, a lightning struck during a light storm while her daughter was playing, also taking her life. Atanacia was left widowed and childless, and went to live with her parents again.

Before her first marriage, she had already met Felipe Durán Durán, the true love of her life. However, as a widow, Felipe’s parents opposed their relationship, it was frowned upon for a single man to marry a widow at that time. Eventually, Atanacia went to live with her sister Catalina in Tampico, Tamaulipas, where she met a young man named Arturo, a train worker, whom she planned to marry. Upon returning to Nochistlán, Zacatecas, to formalize the wedding, Felipe Durán waited for her at the station and begged her not to marry him. She continued with her plans until a messenger sent by Isaac Durán, Felipe’s father, arrived to beg her to save him, since Felipe no longer ate, used to get drunk and he was desperate. Given this, and having continued to love him, Atanacia finally decided to marry Felipe Durán Durán in May 1944.

From her marriage to Felipe, her only child was born, Edmundo Durán Macías, who married Elena Guzmán Ruiz. Through them, Atanacia was blessed with 6 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Atanacia has always been a cheerful, hardworking, and deeply loving woman. Her life has revolved around the countryside, her animals—especially her cows, chickens, and pig —and taking care of her home. A lover of nature and the simple life, until she was 104, she managed her household finances with complete clarity, organizing every expense to the exact amount. Her diet has always been natural and homemade, and her active lifestyle have been key to her longevity. She never stopped walking, tending to plants, or participating in daily chores. She was always concerned for her family, praying for everyone and sharing her wisdom.
