Kame Nagayama (Japanese: 長山カメ) was a Japanese supercentenarian who was the oldest living person in Okinawa Prefecture at the time of her passing.
Kame Nagayama (長山カメ) was born in Nago City, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on September 21, 1891.
At the age of 10, she received a traditional Okinawan hand tattoo known as hajichi. To her, this tattoo was both a mark of beauty and a symbol of adulthood and womanhood.
In her earlier years, she worked in agriculture and also spent time employed at a spinning mill in Shizuoka Prefecture. Nagayama remained active well into her later years, continuing farm work until around the age of 90. She moved into a nursing home at the age of 96. Despite experiencing many hardships in life, her family described her as someone who never lost her cheerful spirit.
She had a great fondness for ashi tibichi (a traditional Okinawan dish made with pig’s feet), and was known for her healthy appetite, hardworking nature, and affection for small children.
When her family once asked her about the secret to her longevity, she simply laughed and said, “I never imagined I would live this long myself.”
Following the death of Gozei Taba, aged 111, on January 6, 2001, Nagayama became the oldest living person in Okinawa Prefecture.
She passed away from natural causes on April 9, 2002, at the age of 110 years and 200 days. After her passing, Kama Nakasone succeeded her as the oldest living person in the prefecture.
Her age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group.
